We are Susanne (47), corporate co-operations manager in an
NGO, and Philipp (45), an English and German grammar school
teacher. We enjoy travelling, socialising with friends, reading, music and
following our football teams Schalke and Bochum. Susanne is fond of graveyards
and is a hobby tour guide on Cologne´s famous Melaten graveyard - visit her
site www.melatenfriedhof.de .
We have done home exchanges to (among others) Boston, San Francisco,
Paris,Tokyo, Vancouver, Barcelona and Amsterdam, all of which were fantastic
experiences.
Cologne
Our home town is Cologne on the river Rhine with one million inhabitants. Come
and explore its impressive cathedral as well as its beautiful romanesque
churches, visit some of the many museums and art galleries, enjoy its theatres
or the opera house, browse in the countless shops on Schildergasse and
Ehrenstraße - or just relax on the banks of the Rhine, in Cologne´s many parks
or in one of the countless cozy pubs and brewhouses in the Old Town with their
easy-going, relaxed atmosphere. Cologne is well-known as a particularly
hospitable and tolerant place and has been a hub of European culture for 2000
years.

Or you might want to take a boat up the river Rhine, past
romantic castles and vineyards and the Loreley rock, stopping at some of the
picturesque little villages on the way for a glass of Rhine wine.
We´re also a good starting place if you´re planning to see some of Europe´s
major cities: It´s only 80 kilometres to Belgium
and the Netherlands; Amsterdam is three hours, Paris less
than four hours, Berlin five hours by train. If you like a bit of nature to
escape to, there´s the Eifel region half an hour away
with countless hiking trails, ancient volcanoes, lakes and beautiful little
villages. The Ruhr area (45 minutes by car), where we both
come from, is an interesting ex-industrial region looking for a new identity;
it has lots of museums, concerts and other events to offer.
Our place
Our appartment is on the third floor (there is a lift) and is 114 square
meters. It has a large hall, three bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom. There
are two balconies, one giving on the street in front of our house, one on a
large green yard with old trees and gardens. Both are spacious enough for
comfortable barbecueing. We are very fond of books (many of them in English),
films and music. There are two TVs (one with a DVD player), two stereos, a PC
with high-speed internet access, a washing machine and a dishwasher. Several
guitars (electric and acoustic) and other instruments are there for you to try
out.
The area is safe and has many good restaurants, cozy bars, lively music clubs
and quality shops (bakery, butcher, fishmonger, wine seller, vegetables as
well as several late night supermarkets). Two tram lines stop right in front
of our house, so you can get to the cathedral / city centre in 12 minutes. The
neighbours are very friendly and helpful; most of them speak English and will
be happy to help you with any problem you might encounter.
